CareScope's take

athenaOne is a reasonable answer for a practice that would rather rent expertise than hire it. The record itself is competent rather than beloved, and the real argument for it is the revenue cycle work that comes attached. That is also the catch: the pricing is tied to what you collect, so the better your month, the larger the invoice. Practices that already bill well sometimes find the arrangement expensive, while practices drowning in denials often find it the cheapest thing they have ever bought. Ask hard questions about what athenahealth does and does not do on your behalf, and get the answer in the contract rather than the sales deck.

Why we like it

  • Revenue cycle services bundled with the record
  • Wide payer connectivity
  • Regular regulatory updates handled by the vendor

Where it falls short

  • Documentation ergonomics divide clinicians
  • Percentage-of-collections pricing grows with your success
  • Customization is limited compared with self-hosted systems

Best for

  • Practices that want billing help bundled with the record
  • Groups adding locations or providers

Consider something else if

  • Practices wanting deep local customization
  • Very small practices with simple, clean billing
