CareScope's take

If a practice does one security thing this year, this is the category. Reused and stolen passwords remain the most common way small practices get breached, and multi-factor authentication is the control that stops it without a project. Duo is popular because enrollment is survivable for non-technical staff and because it covers remote access and email, which is where the damage usually starts. The failure mode is partial deployment: one unprotected remote login undoes the rest. Cover every account, including the ones belonging to vendors.

Why we like it

  • Enrollment non-technical staff can complete
  • Covers remote access and email
  • Clear reporting on who is protected

Where it falls short

  • Per-user cost adds up across a large staff
  • Advanced device policies need admin attention
  • Partial deployment leaves the original risk in place

Best for

  • Any practice protecting email and remote access
  • Practices answering cyber insurance questionnaires

Consider something else if

  • Organizations already standardized on another MFA platform
